Advice to help ease potty training

Potty training one's own child is one of those experiences that can make a parent feel one of two ways: victorious or like a failure. I should know. My husband and I have been in the process of potty training our 3-year-old son, and suffice to say, it's been an uphill challenge with plenty of tears (my own). We thought we were doing everything right, but our son isn't ready. That's something that we just had to accept for his well-being and ours.

Encopresis - The Nasty Side to Constipation

Encopresisguide

Encopresis can be very debilitating condition for your child, both physiologically and psychologically. The following article from the University of Iowa provides some background on this condition, and how to deal with it...

Encopresis

What is encopresis?
Most children are potty trained by the age of four. However, if your child continues to have a lot of bowel movement accidents this is called encopresis.
What causes encopresis?
Potty training teaches children to use the toilet. They learn how their body feels when it is time to go to the bathroom. But sometimes they can’t feel the signals. They can’t tell when it is time to use the toilet. Encopresis isn’t a problem “in the child’s head.” It isn’t a “behavior problem.” Encopresis happens because a child’s colon doesn’t work the way it should.

Bedwetting is an issue that millions of families face every night. It is extremely common among kids who are under the age of 6, and it can last into the preteen years.
