Its All in the Timing!!

One of the very first questions that will come to the mind of parents, is how to know when your child is ready to be potty trained. Get is wrong, and you could be setting yourself up for failure!!

The following article from our own website at pottytrainingsecretsexposed.com, discusses this very issue. For more useful information on this subject, you can visit our website by clicking here.

To your success in potty training,

When Should I Start Potty Training my Child?

Your child should be around 18 months or older to commence potty / toilet training. If you start too much earlier than this and your child is not ready, you will end up running into complications, getting frustrated and taking far longer. Look out for the following signs of readiness in your child for potty training before commencing:

* Bladder control: Your child may have a dry diaper a couple of hours after his/her last diaper change, or he/she wakes up frequently from a daytime nap with a dry diaper. Note however that in some children, bladder control may not be readily apparent. Your child may have the capacity for bladder control but pee frequently in the diaper, because it is possible to pee frequently in the diaper without consequence! This sign is therefore not essential to be observed, but a very positive sign if shown.

* Bowel control: Your child shows signs of awareness when he/she needs to do a poo. For example, going quiet or showing signs of concentration, or telling/signing you that he/she has done a poo.

* Co-ordination: Your child is capable of pulling pants and underpants up and down.

* Concentration: Your child can keep occupied with an activity for five to ten minutes or more.

* Understanding: Your child can follow simple instructions - eg. fetching a toy. Has vocabulary necessary for potty training, ie. understands words such as pee, poo, potty, dry, wet, etc.

* Emotional and social readiness: Can be difficult to gauge. Look for the desire to imitate, the desire to please parents and the desire for control ("I can do it").

If your child shows all of the above signs, then they are ready to be potty trained.

Pediatrics: Potty Training problems
Toilet Training Resistance
What is toilet training resistance?
Children who refuse to be toilet trained either wet themselves, soil themselves, or try to hold back their bowel movements (thus becoming constipated). Many of these children also refuse to sit on the toilet or will use the toilet only if a parent brings up the subject and marches them into the bathroom. Any child who is over 3 years old, healthy, and not toilet trained after several months of trying can be assumed to be resistant to the process rather than

Potty training one's own child is one of those experiences that can make a parent feel one of two ways: victorious or like a failure. I should know. My husband and I have been in the process of potty training our 3-year-old son, and suffice to say, it's been an uphill challenge with plenty of tears (my own). We thought we were doing everything right, but our son isn't ready. That's something that we just had to accept for his well-being and ours.

Encopresis - The Nasty Side to Constipation

Encopresisguide

Encopresis can be very debilitating condition for your child, both physiologically and psychologically. The following article from the University of Iowa provides some background on this condition, and how to deal with it...

Encopresis

What is encopresis?
Most children are potty trained by the age of four. However, if your child continues to have a lot of bowel movement accidents this is called encopresis.
What causes encopresis?
Potty training teaches children to use the toilet. They learn how their body feels when it is time to go to the bathroom. But sometimes they can’t feel the signals. They can’t tell when it is time to use the toilet. Encopresis isn’t a problem “in the child’s head.” It isn’t a “behavior problem.” Encopresis happens because a child’s colon doesn’t work the way it should.

Your child may very well relate to some of the issues raised in the following article from Zip Baby:

Toilet Terrors & Other Potty Training Fears
Potty training fears, often called toilet terrors, are common among toddlers and small children. Look at things from your child’s perspective. He is giving up the security of a diaper for a big, cold thing with a giant hole that might swallow him. Up until this point, your child has been able to go in his diaper. He didn’t have to control himself until a potty was available. He could go anytime and anywhere, knowing that someone would always be there to change his diaper.

When The Diapers Gotta Go
Ever wonder how old is too old for a child to wear a diaper? Often, a child remains in diapers not because of an inability to be potty trained, but because the parent isn't ready to let go a little bit. For a parent, having a child in diapers can be symbolic. It’s what defines a "baby." Sometimes Mom or Dad (or both) isn’t ready to give up their "baby" just yet.

Don’t be concerned if your toddler wets the bed, because most children under the age of five years still urinate in their sleep, and one in 10 younger primary school children do too. Don’t assume that your child can keep their bed dry because they can manage their toileting when they’re awake. It might help if you think of staying dry at night as completely separate to daytime toilet use.

The Pressures of Potty Training

While there are societal pressures to have your child potty trained early, there is no point in proceeding until your toddler is physiologically and mentally ready. The following articles by Deirdre Wilson, courtesy of parenthood.com, cover this issue and some of the differing opinions on when to start and how it should be done...

The Straight Poop About Potty Training
By Deirdre Wilson
“I never really trained them,” Hutchins says. “They trained themselves.” When Jonathan, the oldest, began showing signs of readiness, Hutchins bought a potty and a children’s book about using it. But then, she says, “I let him run around naked. He quickly became aware that something was happening. He never had any interest in the little potty. He had watched us in the bathroom, and he eventually went right to the toilet.”

Potty Training: Ready or Not?
By Deirdre Wilson
How do you know when your child is ready to learn to use a toilet or potty? Here’s what child-development experts say. A child is ready when he or she: • Urinates or has bowel movements at more predictable times.
• Is aware of and can communicate – verbally or through facial expression – the need to urinate or have a bowel movement.
• Dislikes wet or soiled diapers.
• Has motor skills that include being able to walk to the bathroom, pull down pants, sit on the potty, relax and actually go in the potty.
• Can understand and follow simple directions.
• Has a social/emotional readiness that involves “wanting” to be toilet trained.

Potty Training Twins
by Jill Clateman
Potty training twins is like gearing up for an Olympic event. It involves double the equipment, double the training time, double the mess, and parents who posses exponentially more patience. Since starting to teach my three and a half year old boys to use the toilet six months ago, I have hit several roadblocks. From my own trials, I have compiled a list of things to watch out for to help other parents of twins navigate through this tough terrain.

Basics for Toilet Training, Ages 1 - 6

The following two articles by Paula Spencer provide some very useful guidance on toilet training your child broken down into two age groups. Click on the links below for the full story...

Toilet Training Basics, Ages 1 to 3
Paula Spencer
• How do I know when my child's ready?
• How do I get started?
• What's the best method?
• How can I prevent messy accidents?
• How can I make potty training fun?
• When is my child ready to sleep without diapers?
How do I know when my child's ready? Boys tend to stay in diapers longer than girls, but most children are ready to potty-train sometime between their second and third birthdays. There's enormous variation, though: Some children train themselves when they're about 18 months old, while others show no interest until after their fourth birthday. To figure out if it's time to start the process, ask yourself these seven questions.

Stressful Potty Training?

Potty Training can be a very trying time and quite stressful for both the parent and the child. Positive reinforcement and the right attitude can however go a long way to alleviating that stress. The following article by Seth Mullins provides his thoughts on this issue. Click on the link below for the full article...

Potty Training with Minimal Stress
By Seth Mullins January 10, 2007
Like many parenting accomplishments, potty training is achieved by a combination of both our children's readiness and our own involvement and encouragement. Understanding what this change means in the lives of our young ones can minimize their stress, and ours, during that transition. We will see the best results if we use positive reinforcement and a nurturing approach each step of the way.

Age and Readiness for Potty Training

The following research article from the Pediatrics Journal (click on the link below for full details) provides some very interesting findings on  the age of readiness, as related to boys vs girls,  for  toilet training. It appears that the majority of toddlers are not ready for toilet training until after their second birthday.  Refer in particular to the results and conclusion sections of the abstract (as  extracted and shown below), if  you don't want to  digest the whole  article!

Sequential Acquisition of Toilet-Training Skills: A Descriptive Study of Gender and Age Differences in Normal Children

ABSTRACT

Results. The study included 126 girls and 141 boys; 88% were white. Parents submitted a total of 10 741 weekly surveys (range: 1–73; median: 49 per child). Girls demonstrated toilet-training skills at earlier ages than boys. The median ages for "staying dry during the day" were 32.5 months (95% confidence interval: 30.9–33.7) and 35.0 months (95% confidence interval: 33.3–36.7) for girls and boys, respectively. The median ages for readiness skills for girls and boys, respectively, were as follows: "showing an interest in using the potty," 24 and 26 months; "staying dry for 2 hours," 26 and 29 months; "indicating a need to go to the bathroom," 26 and 29 months. There was a marked concordance in the sequences in which girls and boys achieve individual skills. In addition, the interquartile ranges of the toileting skills varied from 6.9 to 11.4 months in girls and from 7.5 to 14.6 months in boys. Conclusions. In this study population, girls achieve nearly all toilet-training skills earlier than boys, including successful completion. Most children do not master the readiness skills until after the second birthday. The range of normalcy for the attainment of individual skills may vary by as much as a year.

Potty Training the Knapp Way

An entertainingly written article by Dr Knapp, giving his perspective on potty training, including some of the differences between boys and girls... Click on the headline link above for details.

Potty Training

Your child is now potty trained!!! Wow you did not know that! They are not going on the toilet but all kids are potty trained by 18 months of age .... in that they know how to go, where to go, the name for it, and they even will occasionally sit on the potty and grunt. Nothing happens because their brains cannot control the muscles. CANNOT control the sphincters. The child will go on the toilet when they are able to: 1. Recognize the full bladder or rectum (you do not teach that, they figure it out on their own) 2. Communicate it to you by patting the dry diaper and saying pee pee or poo poo

Constipation and Fear in Toddlers - the Discomfort - Dread - Delay (D3) Cycle

Constipation can be a major hold up in your toddler progressing to pooping confidently on the potty, with fear of pain being the major hindrance. In this article, Dr Greene explains the issues surrounding constipation. Keep your child well hydrated and with a diet high in fiber, and hopefully you will not face this issue! Click on the link below for more details...

Constipation

Introduction:
As long as your child is in diapers, every single bowel movement will be right there for you to see when her diaper is changed. During the diaper years, the stools undergo several changes. The first bowel movements are the thick, sticky, tarry meconium stools formed while the baby is still inside you. During the first week these give way, in breastfed babies, to soft, yellow, breast milk stools. These usually look like yellow mustard with little seeds. By the time a baby is one week old, she has an average of 8 to 10 of these pleasant (as stools go) stools each day. Formula-fed stools are often tan or yellow at this stage, and a little firmer than breast milk stools. Either way, there are many dirty diapers!
