A sippy, potty dilemma
Posted by: Marci
I received the following e-mail from a mom. “I have a 2 year old that I would like to introduce to potty training. I pretty much have started talking about it with her. She knows the actions of using the potty, but I really haven’t had her actually try. My problem is she absolutely loves milk out of her sippy cup, and a lot of times she prefers that versus eating. She even wants her cup during

Bedwetting is an issue of great concern to many parents. The following article with thanks to www.kidshealth.org may provide some useful guidance in this area. Click on the link for the full article...

Bedwetting is an issue that millions of families face every night. It is extremely common among kids who are under the age of 6, and it can last into the preteen years. Doctors don't know for sure what causes bedwetting or why it stops. But it is considered a natural part of development, and kids eventually grow out of it. Most of the time bedwetting is not a sign of any deeper medical or emotional issues.

Potty/Toilet Training Your Child

The following article from dot com Women provides some handy pointers on potty training your child!
Potty/Toilet Training Your Child
There is no age limit to when you should start toilet training your child. Most toddlers start to use the toilet/potty between the age of one - two years, some might take even longer. This is a new experience for your child so be patient. You will win in the end. Here are a few pointers to help you out.
How do I know when my child is ready?
Boys tend to stay in nappies longer than girls, but most children are ready to potty-train sometime between their second and third birthdays. Some children train themselves when they're about 18 months old, while others show no interest until after their fourth birthday.

The Babykeeper: toilet training with visual aids - Engadget

Letting your child watch while you do your thing on the toilet is a great way to get them interested in doing it themselves, but could this idea take it just a little too far? We've seen our fair share of strange and / or gimmicky products around here, but the Babykeeper by Mommysentials has to be one of the creepiest. This contraption allows you to hang your six to eighteen month old infant on the door of a public toilet stall while you, um, do your business.

Potty Training Phobias

Toilet Terrors and Other Potty Training Fears

Fear is a big issue for many toddlers, particularly around the age of 2 to 3.

Your child may very well relate to some of the issues raised in the following article from Zip Baby:

Toilet Terrors & Other Potty Training Fears
Potty training fears, often called toilet terrors, are common among toddlers and small children. Look at things from your child’s perspective. He is giving up the security of a diaper for a big, cold thing with a giant hole that might swallow him. Up until this point, your child has been able to go in his diaper. He didn’t have to control himself until a potty was available. He could go anytime and anywhere, knowing that someone would always be there to change his diaper.

Are You Holding Your Child Back in Potty Training?

The following article, with thanks to Dr Gail Gross, questions whether you are ready for your child to grow up...

When The Diapers Gotta Go
Ever wonder how old is too old for a child to wear a diaper? Often, a child remains in diapers not because of an inability to be potty trained, but because the parent isn't ready to let go a little bit. For a parent, having a child in diapers can be symbolic. It’s what defines a "baby." Sometimes Mom or Dad (or both) isn’t ready to give up their "baby" just yet.

Bedwetting Blues and Staying Dry at Night

While potty training can be a challenge, getting your child to stay dry at night and out of diapers can be another challenge all to itself! Here is an excellent article from Victorian disability online, covering this issue, with great tips. Click on the link below for more information.

Toilet training - staying dry at night
A child usually masters daytime toileting many years before they can keep their bed dry at night. Don’t be concerned if your toddler wets the bed, because most children under the age of five years still urinate in their sleep, and one in 10 younger primary school children do too. Don’t assume that your child can keep their bed dry because they can manage their toileting when they’re awake. It might help if you think of staying dry at night as completely separate to daytime toilet use.

The Pressures of Potty Training

While there are societal pressures to have your child potty trained early, there is no point in proceeding until your toddler is physiologically and mentally ready. The following articles by Deirdre Wilson, courtesy of parenthood.com, cover this issue and some of the differing opinions on when to start and how it should be done...

The Straight Poop About Potty Training
By Deirdre Wilson
“I never really trained them,” Hutchins says. “They trained themselves.” When Jonathan, the oldest, began showing signs of readiness, Hutchins bought a potty and a children’s book about using it. But then, she says, “I let him run around naked. He quickly became aware that something was happening. He never had any interest in the little potty. He had watched us in the bathroom, and he eventually went right to the toilet.”

The Straight Poop About Potty Training - Parenthood.com

Potty Training: Ready or Not?
By Deirdre Wilson
How do you know when your child is ready to learn to use a toilet or potty? Here’s what child-development experts say. A child is ready when he or she: • Urinates or has bowel movements at more predictable times.
• Is aware of and can communicate – verbally or through facial expression – the need to urinate or have a bowel movement.
• Dislikes wet or soiled diapers.
• Has motor skills that include being able to walk to the bathroom, pull down pants, sit on the potty, relax and actually go in the potty.
• Can understand and follow simple directions.
• Has a social/emotional readiness that involves “wanting” to be toilet trained.
